Healthy Living
In a recent Ipsos survey, a striking 58% of respondents supported a tax on Ultra Processed Foods (UPFs) and foods high in sugar, salt, and fats. Only 19% opposed the idea. This raises an important question: should we be advocating for such a tax to combat the rising tide of diet-related illnesses?
The Labour Party has already highlighted the importance of tackling obesity, a crisis costing the UK an estimated £98 billion per year. The NHS alone spends £6.5 billion annually on treating obesity-related diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. With these staggering figures, it’s clear that addressing the root causes of these illnesses is not just a health issue but an economic imperative.
At a recent healthy lifestyle conference attended by over 100 GPs and health professionals, the focus was on empowering patients to make better choices and improve their long-term health. The question remains: what more can we do to take control of our health? After all, no one forces us to consume these harmful foods.
Dr. David Unwin at the conference made a powerful analogy, comparing our consumption of UPFs to the production of foie gras—stuffing ourselves with foods that harm our bodies. It’s easy to reach for that tempting snack, especially when marketing tells us, “Once you start, you can’t stop.” But this is where willpower meets opportunity.
Health coaching is one approach gaining traction, particularly for those over 50 who wish to live healthier, more fulfilling lives. I’ve integrated health coaching into my consultancy to help people break free from unhealthy habits and embark on a journey toward better health.
The truth is, poor health is already crippling our economy, with over 3 million people missing from the workforce due to sickness. This not only reduces productivity but also lowers tax revenue, putting further strain on public services. We can’t afford to ignore this issue any longer.
